Grab a cup of coffee and get filled in on the latest campus news and events. Come fill up on a warm cup of coffee and the latest news and events from Blackwell. This morning gathering is designed specifically for parents to hear directly from Mr. Eaton about what’s happening here at Elizabeth Blackwell. Mr. Eaton will also be available to field questions about our school, the district, and the state of education in Washington. It’s also a great time to meet other parents and hear from the PTSA.

Blackwell Family STEM Night

SAVE THE DATE: Thursday, February 8th

We’ve taken the best of the Science Fair and Math Nights and combined them into one fantastic event!!!

STEM Night is an evening of hands on science, math, and engineering activities for students and families to complete together. The event includes a range of activities covering different topics and connections to various careers. Students are invited to participate by designing and completing their own Science Fair experiment to be showcased at the event.

Registration forms and the information packets can be found on the PTSA website. Registration forms will be due January 19th, 2018.

STEM Night will be held on Thursday, February 8th, 2018 from 6:00-8:00pm. We would love for all of our Blackwell families to come be a part of this hands-on event!

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to either chair Elle Spikes spikes.elle@gmail.com or Sarah Breen smbreen96@hotmail.com

Used Book Fair
PTSA Used Book Fair: January 24 - 26

Out with the old and in with the USED! It’s time to go through your dusty bookshelf and pull out the ones your kids have outgrown. Each year we collect several thousand books, games, and puzzles. The two classrooms that collect the most books get first pick at the book fair. Load up your bags and boxes to bring in your used books from January 16 - January 22. Books will be sold for only 50 cents and each student is entitled to one free book.

Please remember that we do not accept computer games, adult books, or any magazines.

Puzzles and board games are great if they have all the pieces and are sealed so no pieces are lost along the way.

This is a really fun (and easy!) event for volunteers. You can volunteer for just an hour or for a couple of hours over a few days.

Volunteers are needed for the following:

Sort Books: January 16 - 22 , 9 - 10 am
Set Up: January 23rd (9 - noon)
Selling Books:
January 24: 8:45 - 4:00pm
January 25: 8:45-9:30am and noon-4pm
January 26: 8:45-4pm

Anyone interested in helping with this event should contact Carolyn Payne at cpayne_9@me.com.

Your PTSA Dollars at Work
Note from Mr. Eaton:

Earlier this week the PTSA completed a competitive grant process to support Blackwell Elementary. Over the past month, our staff had the opportunity to submit grant requests for supplemental educational materials, opportunities, and events to support our students learning and help realize our vision of creating a community of limitless potential. This grant process was made possible with funds raised in our fall fun run fundraiser. As a result, over $21,000 worth of items and opportunities were funded for Blackwell. On behalf of the entire Blackwell staff, I would like to thank the generous support of our parent community and the leadership of the PTSA.

Note from Kristen Schwager, Co-VP Blackwell PTSA Board:

On behalf of the Blackwell PTSA we’d like to communicate that we’ve completed the competitive grant process for the teachers and staff to participate in for the 2017-18 school year.

Take a look at the deck >>> HERE. This gives a bit of detail on the process we went through and the breakdown of allocation by category and by grade level.  We are doing something a little different this year which is saving some of our funds to have a parent & student (i.e. the “P” and “S” of PTSA) competitive grant process. This process will kick off over the next few weeks once we get organized.

Special thanks to the grant committee members who took the time to sift through all the requests and to have a thoughtful discussion.

To the Blackwell teachers & staff - thanks to all of you for what you do for our children and for our community. You are all truly amazing!

Pantry Pack Food Drive

Did you know that 740 children in the Lake Washington school district would go hungry without Pantry Packs over the weekend? Hopelink’s Pantry Packs program provides weekend packs of food for approximately 740 LWSD students who are identified as being “food insecure.” With community donations of kid-friendly food and funds, 40-50 volunteers come together each month to “pack the packs” at Hopelink’s Kirkland/Northshore warehouse. Volunteer drivers then deliver the packs to schools where the packs get into the hands of hungry children.

Help feed our local community! The Student Council and PTSA Sharing is Caring is sponsoring a Food Drive to benefit Hopelink Pantry Packs. In order to fill the pantry packs we are asking for specific donations to be dropped off outside each classroom in plastic bags. Click HERE to see the list of each grade.

Pantry Packs Food Drive on February 5-9, 2018. Please bring extra plastic bags for packing. Student Council will be creating the packs on Friday the 9th.  We need parent volunteers to drive the pantry packs to Hopelink in Kirkland on Monday February 12th at 9:30am. Please contact Maggie Hunkins (maggiehunkins@gmail.com) if you would like to be a volunteer driver.
